The Songshan Creative and Cultural Park is, like the nearby Huashan1914 Cultural Park, a great example of a factory - turned - arts centre. It was built in 1937 as the Matsuyama Tobacco Plant as an “industrial village”, complete with gardens and even a large Baroque-style courtyard. It was designed to make workers feel more at home than at traditional factories.
Production ceased in 1998, and the centre reopened in its current form in 2013 to provide a platform for the support of Taiwan’s growing creative industries. The site regularly hosts artistic and cultural exhibitions, and many smaller spaces are rented out to local artists. Even if you are not interested in art or design it's well worth having a wander around this beautifully-preserved old site from times gone by.
This unique museum displays hundreds of unique creations from around the world, from chairs to coffee makers. One hall features products from Taiwan, most of which are, predictably tea, bicycles and of course plenty of computers, old and new. Other exhibits explain the design process itself. The museum is completely bilingual and tickets are sold at the Design Pin shop across the courtyard (NT80).
Cross the road (Zhongxiao East Rd, Section 4) and walk around the Taipei Dome construction site. It currently takes around ten minutes to reach the entrance on the opposite side, but this will probably become easier after construction finishes.
The grounds open until late.
