Taipei is fast shaping up to be one of Asia’s most liveable cities. Vibrant, colourful and easy to navigate, a few days in Taipei should be a given for any trip to Taiwan. That said, it’s equally important to get out of Taipei and enjoy life in slower cities and (if time permits, which hopefully it will) experience the beautiful mountains and countryside.
Much of Taipei, however, is nondescript apartment buildings, old or new, with the ubiquitous 7-11s, scooter shops, buffets, lottery stores and little worth seeing or experiencing as a visitor, so it’s important to have an itinerary and plan your day trips. Unlike in neighbouring Tokyo, a visit to a random suburb probably won’t yield much of interest.
